Not many people can claim to be experts at moving and relocating, as we may only experience a significant move two or three times in our lives. Never fear, for what follows are a number of valuable tips for moving home in Austin.
Take time to plan. In an effort to feel like we’re making progress, often we start doing a variety of uncoordinated and unplanned activities to make us feel we’re on top of things. Action without planning can be a waste. Sit down and make a to-do-list and calendar. You can find planning guides online to help make sure you’re not missing something.
Clean out the clutter before you pack. We all accumulate “stuff” and a move is a good reason to get rid of things. This is your chance to de clutter and simplify. Make a few runs to Goodwill or make some extra cash with a garage sale. Either way you will be thankful when packing (and unpacking).
Use purpose built packing supplies. Trying to make due with grocery cartons or boxes fished out of dumpsters can lead to damaged items. Packing boxes are sturdy and made to withstand moving and stacking. Nothing can spoil the excitement of moving to a new place like finding a box full of damaged valuables. Same goes for using newspaper for wrapping. The newsprint can rub off, so use specific packing paper and leave the newspaper for taking up airspace in the box.
Label your boxes clearly and on all sides. Include specific terms on the box like pots, or dinner plates. Trying to figure out what is in the box labeled Kitchen Stuff when you’re trying to find a coffee mug can be frustrating! Keep important documents with you. Legal documents, car layoff notices, insurance policies, marriage or birth certificates, anything that is difficult to replace should be kept with you and hand carried to your new home. This goes for any valuables or items of sentimental value that cannot be replaced. With these tips in mind you will find yourself enjoying your new place without too much anxiety or stress.
